Rules Corner – New Class and the Number 1 Bib
Starring Debi Koltoniak with special guest Drew Hilger
Debi: I would like to welcome Drew Hilger back to Rules Corner.
Drew: Thanks Debi. It is great to be back.
Debi: A lot of people are talking about the recent rules changes and I want to be able to tell my peeps exactly what is going on.
Drew: Sure, Debi. When we did our review this year there was one issue we really wanted to address. The Elite Men class was by far the largest class both in terms of the number of racers and the handicap spread. With even more racers on the cusp of bumping in it was clear we needed to do something.
Debi: So, you are saying size matters?
Drew: The size was not as big of a concern as the handicap spread. We want to make sure everyone is having fun and while we can’t mandate fun, we need to do our best to ensure we have competitive classes for everyone.
Debi: That makes sense, so what was the solution?
Drew: We created a new class called open and amended the bottom end of the Elite classes. See the chart at the top of this message
Debi: So, this class could include some of our female racers?
Drew: It could. Anyone with an average handicap, for any one discipline, below 12 can choose to race in this class. If a racers handicap drops below 10 they are automatically placed in this new class.
Debi: I heard there was also a change to the rules regarding the #1 Bib? You know that is a big deal to us B-Lite…I mean the Elite Women.
Drew: We did have to make a change there as well. This new class created the potential for multiple people to be competing for the bib potentially from different classes.
Debi: So, if there was one female racer competing in this new Open Class, would they win the bib by default?
Drew: Well, if we left the rule as it was, the winners of EM and EW would technically win the #1 bibs.
Debi: So, what was the solution?
Drew: Well, the goal was always to award the number 1 bibs to the fastest man and the fastest woman. So, we changed the rule to award it to the racers with the lowest combined handicap.
Debi: So, if I came back for Hollywood for one race and threw down another… I mean a…. zero handicap I would be a lock for the number one bib. Then I could just sit on the sidelines and look stunning the rest of the season?
Drew: No, there is a caveat to avoid that scenario. To get the #1 bib you must not only have the lowest combined handicap, but you also have to finish at least 50% of the races we run for that season.
Debi: So, I need to be fast, consistent and beautiful?
Drew: Well looks aren’t a part of the criteria, but you do have to be fast, consistent and a regular participant in our program.
Debi: My motto has always been safety, style and speed.
Drew: Those all help. We will still award 2 number one bibs for our fastest male and fastest female racers. We just can’t be certain what class they will come from.
Debi: Thank you for your explanation, Drew. I look forward to seeing you on the slopes.
Well, that's it it for now. Look for the next eNews on Thursday before our first race weekend. Looking forward to seeing you all!
